Strange Quiet

When I was a little girl, Jessie and I would go and visit our grandparents for a week in the summer. We always had a spectacular time, spending much of it hiking the Appalachian Trail with our grandfather.

Now, I wonder how my mom stood it! Hannah left this morning to spend three days being spoiled by her Aunt Jessie. I've spoken with her three times now, but I still miss her terribly.

There is this quiet where Hannah should be. Lily was down for her nap, and there was no Hannah making little Hannah-type noises, such as munching lunch or reading a book, or singing a little made-up Hannah song.

There was no drama over going down for a nap, no crumbs left on the kitchen table from lunch, no water glass leaving a ring on the table because someone didn't use a coaster.

Dinner this evening was a rather subdued affair with no chatter from the Monkey. There were no silly, made-up knock knock jokes and no banter with her daddy.

We put Lily to bed, and there was no one to rush into jim jams and read a night night story to. I'm a little maudlin at this point.

Yes, it's been nice to have a little extra one-on-one time with Lily, but it's just not the same around here without the Monkey!

Love the pic of the girls getting sprayed by the hose! Ella's sopping wet pj's are still in your laundry. You can bring them back to me when you come. And DON'T FORGET MY SCISSORS AND CLIPPERS! I could just cry- I had to cancel two of my appointments for tomorrow!

Also, Hannah went right to sleep without any trouble. I gave her 5 stuffed animals to choose from to sleep with and she picked a bunny, snuggled down and was out like a light. Perhaps the dependence on the lovies can be overcome during this trip.

I only had my kids taken (all 4) once by a friend, so I could spend an afternoon all by myself. My oldest son had just been hit by a car, returning home from the hospital with a cracked hip, and learning to walk again. I'd managed the household alone (George was in traveling sales), and was so exhausted from the drama, that rather than get out and have a change of scene, I took a 3 hour nap! That was the only nap I recal having in a 25 year period. Memorable, indeed.
