Bri also called the mulch people and they'll have our mulch here sometime within the next three weeks. Hooray! But, it is three weeks down the road and we do have a new bed that needs a bit of mulch to hold the landscaping fabric down. Sooooo, we stopped by Lowe's to pick up some peat moss (another crucial ingredient, the third being compost) and a couple of bags of mulch to tide us over until the mulch arrives.
I'm getting SO excited about all our planned changes and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my enthusiasm for our projects doesn't wane as the temperatures and humidity increase. There is nothing worse than temps in the mid 80s at 8 in the morning...UGH! I'm also hoping Lil keeps me coming out to take care of my plants as I should. She is quite avid in this gardening thing and she and I scurried around putting in flowers this evening. We have a six-pack of Dusty Miller and one of "Snack" dragons left to put out front by the mailbox. Everything else went right in.
Amy, that purslane is not a succulent (thank goodness!) but does like for the soil to be a bit more moist than some of the other plants I have in that bed. Oh, well, we'll see what happens...;o)
Last night, when I finished my post, I got to work on the kitchen. Nana couldn't use her baker's rack in her new house and offered it to me. I jumped at the offer and spent last night making it comfortable in its new home. :oP
Isn't it lovely? :o)
Tonight's agenda is to wash the plastic ware and travel mugs and clean the bathrooms. Lissie and Paul are coming for the weekend and the house could use a bit of a scrub.

Today's Sparklies:
1. As I type this, I'm sitting out on the porch swing, listening to the evening sounds. Ahhhh. (I'm actually getting ready to snuggle with B, hee hee!)
2. We found vermiculite!
3. Waylen has been to the vet and now has allergy meds. (Don't ask.)
4. We had standardized testing today and when we were finished, Lola and I took the kiddos outside to enjoy the morning sun and to run off some steam. It was SO lovely!
5. The gorgeous pink dress Nana and Pop picked up for Lil from Marshall's. It has a matching dress for her baby, Kelly.
6. The smell of the air in spring. It's all earthy and fertile and delicious. :o)
No milestones.

Off to snuggle with my boy and then head inside to clean.
******EDITED**************
Mom posted the best fertilizer recipe in the comments and I wanted to be sure to share it with anyone who might be interested. I posted it at Follow Your Bliss for future reference. :o)

I wish I could remember the recipe for the homemade fertilizer that makes flowers bloom themselves to death. Well, not really to death, but the profusion of flowers is "gob smackingly" beautiful. I know it had non-sudsy ammonia and salt peter and maybe baking powder??? Maybe Paul can remember. He used to help me mix it up.

Whoo hoo! I found the recipe:
It is the following items to one gallon warm water:
1 tsp. Epsom salts
1 tsp. salt peter (Get in Rx dept. at Wal-Mart)
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. non-sudsy ammonia
This is the best fertilizer I have ever used. Move over Miracle-Gro

Rachel, I love the colours in your kitchen and don't you love your Keurig coffee maker? I love mine, that's for sure...Have fun gardening,Anja
You could dry those marigold noggins out and save the seed from the inside. Just a thought.
K- and I were just discussing how we miss our vase of fresh flowers in the bathroom. We can't wait for our flowers to start blooming (we can't safely plant annuals here until May 20 or so), so we'll be waiting.
Glad that you made it through day one of standardized testing. I know it is necessary, but I never recall liking it as a kid. Running outside was a lovely reward, though!
Flowers are looking lovely! Can't wait to see more of them! :)
PS Thanks Lissie for the recipe! I'm writing it down now!
:) Amy
I did quite a few chores yesterday, thanks to you. How could I not? It would be embarrassing not to when you are being so industrious!
I'm going to use your Mum's fertiliser recipe....right after I work out what a gallon translates to....and what the heck salt peter is....mmmmm.
Love
Jane
I am living vicariously through you until NJ warms up a little and I love hearing about all your gardening plans. I cannot wait to get my basil, cilantro and rosemary planted again.
I'm jelous of your spring weather, it's snowing again and cold here in Colorado!!!
Happy gardening!!
Julie
Curious about the color scheme in your kitchen. I've just had a makeover done on my own kitchen and can not figure out a color to go with. I've got oak cabinets, dark countertops and no clue what color to paint!!
How did you choose your color? Do you know what it's called and does it make it seem dark in your kitchen at all? I don't comment often but read your blog daily.

Your home seems so warm and fuzzy - I love that :)
Oh I love the bakers rack! It looks great! :) I sure wish that I had a porch swing. I can hardly wait for spring to be in full bloom here too. Your garden is really coming along, beautiful!
I'm starting to get jealous of all this spring cleaning/organizing you've been doing. Everything looks great!
I love that you are so excited over vermiculite! I completely understand, having mixed up a similar concoction for the veggie garden a few weeks ago. My spinach, lettuces & arugula are starting to poke through, but no sign of the sugar snaps just yet. I haven't even begun the flower beds, since our spring bulbs are just starting to poke through. There was frost all over the mini-greenhouse things I concocted to start some seeds in on the back porch; I suspect they are a lost cause, since I started too early and should have kept them in the house. We'll see. I'll keep them going until I'm convinced nothing will grow. Maybe I'll be surprised.
Those matching little girl/doll dresses are so much fun... Sophie had one last year, and Bitty Baby is still in the dress. Sadly, I think Sophie won't wear her's again; she's grown half a foot this past year, and all of last year's 5s are going to be too short for her this spring. It will break her heart... so I guess I'll just have to take her shopping? ;>
Thanks for the fertilizer recipe! Wow. What an interesting combination of ingredients! I have written it down and will defintely mix up a batch.
Your flower beds look so lovely. It just gets me "itching" to get out and do my own, but I need to wait another few weeks. :(
I know it hurt to snap those blooms off....I do it and then run real fast!! ha ha
I love the bakers rack. Bruce had one when we combined households, and I wouldn't let him get rid of it even though there's no room in this kitchen. It's sitting in the garage just waiting for who knows what! It's just too lovely to part with..
O.K. Ms. Motivation and Energy!
Please please please come help me! I have to get the house ready to sell and I am beginning to slow down. I also can only use my left hand/arm-I had shoulder surgery and must keep my shoulder immobile for at least another 6 weeks!
Your yard looks wonderful! The baker's rake is a great touch. It looks great and seems to be at home.
I always like reading about your exploits because you get me excited to start some of my own! We have had a modest garden in the past, but now I think I need to be a little more ambitious ad tackle a larger one. If I do, I will certainly ty that fertilizer recipe.
I must admit, I am feeling a little jealous at all the gardening you are doing! Our frost date isn't until May here in PA, so I have to wait until Mother's Day to plant my annuals. Meanwhile, I am enjoying my daffodils and forsythia!
