As I've said so often, I'm a big ol' nerd who enjoys geek TV. I'm sadly out of touch with all that is wonderful and amazing in the land of pop culture. I get clued in through listening to conversations and reading some websites, but for the most part, I'm in the dark.
I say this because I've been thinking about my post from the other evening about Lily watching the good "Star Wars" movies and the need to see them not just because they are enjoyable, but because there are any number of cultural references to them. The same is true for "The Wizard of Oz" (which she has yet to see due to my childhood hangups with the terrifying flying monkeys). Kirsten mentioned "Forest Gump" and I've been thinking that "The Sound of Music" is right up there as well.
So, my question to you is, what movies do you think kiddos need to see due to their significance in cultural references?

Sparklies:
1. This pony is too funny:
2. From this morning.
3. This cutie pie all bundled up against the cold and wind:
4. Talking to Dani. :o)
5. All the websites blacked-out because of SOPA and PIPA. While on the one hand, it's been a bit of a frustration (I wanted to make pitas and my recipe site was dark--ACK!!), on the other hand, these folks and sites are taking a stand for what they believe in, and I can't fault them for that.
6. I saved over $90 on groceries today!!!! WOO HOO! I did some major restocking and stocking up.
No milestones.

The Princess Bride would be a good one too.
I think back to all of our favorites that would come on T.V. We would freak if Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, or The 10 Commandments came on. In fact The Sound of Music has always been one of my very favorites. My dad and I would watch it together every time it came on.
The original Muppet Movie and the new one from 2011. No computer generated characters or special effects in either movie. Just good old fashioned vaudeville fun.
I just had my 8 year old watch Back to the Future. I think that has so many cultural references and it was just plain fun.
As a side note I always check age appropriateness at http://www.commonsensemedia.org/
I have found this helpful for my family.
Your girls are adorable, all snuggled up in pink. I'm thinking the Shirley Temple movies. And for maybe a little older kids Dances With Wolves.
How about It's a Wonderful Life... :)
I love classic TV shows...Cosby, Muppets, Family Ties, etc. Jamison and I will watch those together. I have to think of some movies. Did you say Back to the Future? I love the pony!
We love Mary Poppins. In fact, I think we'll be watching it in a bit.
We are also big fans of Little Fairy on the House (Little House on the Prairie.) It is so important to see how people lived, how children had to kick in and help because it was just the way it was. Everyone pulled together and helped out. In fact, we had just watched an episode called The One Hundred Mile Walk. (If I recall the name of the episode.) The first harvest of wheat was just ready, but a hail storm came and destroyed the crop. The fathers walked off and found work to make money for the families for winter. The wives pulled together, harvested the wet and downed wheat and shared the final processed product amongst the families. They took lemons and did their best to make prairie lemonade. They also deal with issues of slavery, illness and other things that our families seem to forget about now.
I also love Christy for the same reason. Shows that I can watch with K- and not worry about content.
Oh my goodness, I love Ellie's fancy little scarf! Too cute!
Those monkeys in The Wizard of Oz terrified me too. They still do come to think of it. :)
My very sensitive 6 yo had heard of the Wizard of Oz and really wanted to watch it, but I knew she wasn't ready. Then I got the idea to get the book on CD from the library. We listened to it in the car and it was very enjoyable for both of us. The monkey scene was still a little scary, but we turned it off and talked about it, and then we were able to keep going. In a way, I think she probably got more out of it than watching the movie because it explained a lot of things, whereas in the movie, she would have had to figure them out. Many things probably would have gone over her head. Hope that helps.
Oh, and I always signed my posts as "A friend praying for you in MD" before because I didn't have a google account. Same person, and still praying for you in MD. LOL.
