Of Fairy Houses and Letting Go

Lil has recently begun asking if she may play outside our yard and in the alley and woods our yard borders.  While I know this is perfectly safe, as she's right there, I still hesitated because she's suddenly outside the little cocoon of safety our fence provides.

However, she's seven and wants a chance to stretch those wings and explore.  So, we let her go.  I can see her through the fence and hear her playing and it gives me comfort, while at the same time, she is experiencing a since of freedom and independence.  Win/win.

One of the big reasons she and Alicia wanted to get into the woods was so they could make fairy houses.  This is actually in the alley right by our fence.  They found moss and other natural items and went to town.  Quite literally!

As you can see from the scale provided by Lil's foot there, the houses are pretty small.  They have created an entire village and spent Sunday and again yesterday afternoon working on it.

This is the princess's house.  Apparently Alicia is working on the queen's house.

I'm not sure what everything is--I'm not sure if the girls know either.  Maybe they do.

I do know there's a church, multiple houses and maybe a store?  I'll have to get the details.

They created a hidey-hole as well.  The piece of moss Lil's holding up there will lay down over the hole to hide the fairies if danger should appear.

This is the cemetery.  Yes, apparently fairies need a final resting place.  Who knew?

See, they really aren't that far from home (Lil would be leaning up against my fence and that's Sadie's fence straight ahead, and you can't see it, but Alicia's fence is off to the left), and hey, Lil's playing it safe by wearing her helmet.  What more could a mom ask for?  ;o)

I'm sure the girls will be chomping at the bit to get out and work on their village again this afternoon. I can't wait to see what they add to it! :o)

Sparklies:

1.  Lil was really stretching her creative muscles last night:

Can you believe how old she's starting to look?  My baby is well and truly gone.

2.  I got in a great walk with C and A and C. :o)
3.  All chores were finished and Bean didn't destroy her bedroom. ;o)

No milestones.

We are fairy houseless here. K has a fancy for making bird feeders. We're on our second one outside this year. Hopefully, the squirrels won't try to hang from this one.

It took me a bit to let K ride her bike to the end of the road and back (we're on a dead end block, so it's only to the bottom of the block that is closed in by a fence.) Everyone knows her. All of the yards are fenced, so people don't walk through. Still, she's kind of out of sight, but within the confines of our little fenced in block. It works for me.

I love the creativity of little people. It is so hard to let them out of the cocoon...but so worth it.

Rach, I smiled all the way through this post. It took me back to my childhood and I love the little faerie village. The lot at the end of our cul de sac will stay undisturbed through this year, so I get to enjoy our faerie glen again this summer. Strange how some things never leave you. I totally understand Lil's need to spread her wings. By this age Pam and I needed to get outside the confines of our homes and go discover a whole new world. Good for you for letting her do that.

Also, I cannot believe how grown up Lil is. Time seems to have flown by so quickly.

Hugs

So we started letting Liam go off with his older siblings to the park across the street or the creek and it was a seriously big step for us. We also just started letting him play in the back yard by himself as long as I can see him. At almost 6, he feels like such a big kid. It's certainly hard to give him that freedom but he's growing up even if mommy doesn't want him to.

Also, help! help! help! For Liam's birthday party of Sunday we're going an I Spy / Lego party. I was going to make lego goodie bags using primary color gift bags, but was thinking about what to use for the 6 lego "dots" on the front of the bag (hopefully you get the vision :) ). As a master card, crafty person, do you have any suggestions? Since I have to make 15 bags, I need it to be easy and cheap. I totally thougth of you when I came up with the idea. Help!!

That fairy village is wonderful! Good for you for letting them wander out of bounds a little.

Peg,

Circle stickers! Find the ones you would use to tag items at a yard sale. They're cheap and easy! Maybe you could mount them on cardboard and cut around that to give them depth and dimension and then glue those on the bag. :o)

Good luck!

Thanks! I'm thinking there are some middle schoolers just waiting to help me cut out cardboard circles and glue them on the bags after I helped them with their science fair boards the last week :)

The fairy houses are so cute and sweet. I remember playing outside for hours at that age up and down our street. I'm still nervous letting my 13 1/2 year old go to the park around the corner from our house but I can't keep following him there. : ) I'm thankful for cellphones!
